FAQ

I’ve been seeing a lot of the same questions pop up recently, so I thought I could try to answer them all here for you! If you want to know anything else feel free to leave a comment here or on a blog post, or contact me on social media (I’m pretty horrible when it comes to email though).

Travel + Personal life

What countries have you been to?
I’ve been to around 80 countries now, and you can find all of them on a clickable map on my destinations page.
How long have you been living abroad?
I’ve been living outside of the U.S. since summer 2010. I was in Japan for two years, then I had Thailand as a base for two and a half years, and then I backpacked up to Norway and have been living here ever since!
Do you usually travel alone?
It really varies! I travel a lot with friends and family, but I’m also a big fan of solo travel so I usually try to fit in a few trips on my own each year as well.
How do you take pictures of yourself when you're traveling on your own?
I’ve written a blog post answering that very question, which you can read here!
What camera do you use for your photos and videos?
You can find all the camera gear I travel with here.
How do you afford to travel so much?
Four years ago, I wrote this post, about how I saved $44,000 to travel the world, and how I was able to budget that to last me for several years.

Now I am a full-time travel blogger. This means that I do sometimes work with destinations and brands to go on paid trips (I always disclose on my blog when a trip is sponsored). But mostly I still pay for my travel and accommodation on my own, and instead I’ll make money by writing about the places I visit. You can read more about how I make money blogging here.

How did you travel independently in Iran as a U.S. citizen?
I didn’t! My mother is Norwegian, so I have two passports: one American and one Norwegian. Americans currently can only travel to Iran as part of official tours, so I used my Norwegian passport while in Iran. I got a 15-day visa on arrival at the airport in Tehran, for which the process was incredibly easy. You can read about my experience getting a visa for Iran here.
How tall are you?
I’m 5’9 (175 cm).

Life + Travel in Norway

How can you live in Norway as an American?
I was actually born with dual U.S. and Norwegian citizenship, as my mother is Norwegian. But I do have friends who moved to Norway as U.S. citizens. You can read more about moving to Norway here.
Can you help me plan my trip to Norway?
I’m afraid I no longer have time to offer personalized travel advice to everyone who reaches out to me (sorry, I wish I could!) but you can find all my Norway recommendations, including a clickable map, on my Norway travel guide page.
How expensive is Norway?
Norway is an expensive country, but there are definitely ways to travel here without spending much money.

I actually think there are a lot of misconceptions about how expensive Norway is, because most of the information about travel in Norway is written either by Norwegians, who generally have lots of money because salaries are really high here, or by people who have visited Norway but weren’t here long enough to learn how to travel and live here on a budget.

You can find all of my tips for traveling in Norway on a budget here.

Where do you recommend I visit in Norway?
It really depends on what you want to experience while in Norway! You can find all my Norway recommendations, including a clickable map, on my Norway travel guide page.

Blogging

How can you make enough money blogging to live in Norway?
I’ve had so many people ask me this that I’ve actually written a whole post on it! You can read how I make money blogging here, and you can read another updated post about blogging full time here.
Do you have any advice for how to start a blog?
I’ve written a post about how to start a blog here. I also have a series about travel blogging, including tips and things I wish I had learned earlier. I don’t publish these posts on my home page or send them out to my regular subscribers, but you can find all of the posts under the blogging tab in my navigation menu, and sign up to be notified of new posts here.
Can I publish a guest post on your site?
I don’t generally accept guest posts, however I do have a series on my blog where guest contributors share information about off the beaten path destinations. If you send me an email with a destination you’d like to write about, I’ll send you a list of questions to answer about the place.

If you are a brand looking for coverage on my blog, please see this page.
