Summary

The Rockland 20, 24, 28 Inch Luggage Set works perfectly both for longer trips, or short trips where you’ll only need the smaller suitcase for your carry on luggage. I especially love the creamy colors, lightweight design, and durability of these pieces.

Since I travel so much people are always asking me for luggage recommendations, so I’ve been meaning to write this review of the Rockland Melbourne Hardside Expandable Spinner Wheel Luggage 3-Piece Set for a while. Now, I actually no longer use these suitcases, but they were my first luggage set and lasted really well for budget luggage!

That’s why they’re always my top recommendation for people looking for good quality suitcases on a small budget. Now, I mostly used the smaller suitcase, which is fine for carry on as long as you don’t expand it, but I did use the larger one for some bigger trips and was really impressed with how well it held up.

It definitely got a bit scuffed up (have you ever seen how much checked luggage gets thrown around when loading and unloading from a plane? so crazy!) but I never saw any actual damage during all my flights.

Plus they’re really stylish! Because, I know this is silly, but I really don’t want to be dragging around ugly bags.

Rockland Luggage: Melbourne Hardside Expandable Spinner Wheel Luggage, 20, 24, 28 inch 3-Piece Set Review

Things I love about the Rockland Luggage Set

DESIGN

To be perfectly honest, I first chose Rockland luggage because I liked the look of this three piece set – I especially love that it comes in so many different colors. I went with the silver one and it was always really easy to spot my bag when it came off the plane – I sometimes even got compliments on it when checking in for my flights!

PRICE

Looks aside, I also chose this set because of the low price. Basically I scoured amazon for the cheapest luggage sets with the highest customer reviews, and Rockland luggage won! The suitcases do feel a bit flimsy and light (though I think the light weight is also a good thing!) but once you pack them they’re actually super sturdy.

DURABILITY

Now, I should note that these suitcases definitely aren’t going to be as durable as luggage costing several hundred dollars. But then, they are only a fraction of the price of expensive luggage. So while you can’t really compare the quality to really expensive luggage brands, I do think that as far as budget luggage goes, these pieces are incredibly durable.

SPACE + WEIGHT

These suitcases are very roomy, but also not too heavy, which can be a hard combination to find in luggage these days. I actually recently brought out the 20 inch suitcase again for a flight where my carry on was getting a bit heavy, because this one is so light.

The interior mesh pocket is perfect for keeping my small things organized, and I love that these have handles on the sides as well to help when lifting them above seats. Super handy!

Things that could be improved with the Rockland Luggage Set

WHEELS

So, I’ve actually had no problems with the wheels, but I have heard from other people that the wheels can be flimsy on this Rockland set. Mine are still totally fine though, so maybe some people just had bad luck? Mine run really smoothly in all directions.

Okay, usually I do have more complaints when doing luggage reviews, but I seriously just really love this set! And I think especially for the price, you’re not going to be able to do much better than this.

The only real reason I upgraded my set eventually was because I wanted something that felt a bit better quality. I travel about 2 weeks out of every month, so I wanted something really high quality, which this set is not. But if you don’t travel so often, for all practical purposes the Rockland luggage set is great!

I came across Rockland luggage here and I have to say that I am quite impressed with their design. 🙂

Do you know if Rockland has luggage that comes with a power pack with a USB connector? Delsey has one, and I am actually struggling between rockland & delsey at the moment.

I’ve had a Rockland carryon for 19 years and it’s just starting to show its age in terms of zipper seams loosening and coming apart. Also for the last couple of trips I notice the retractable handle gets stuck. So, definitely time for something new but I’m going for Rockland again.

We bought a middle sized 4 wheeled case in September/October this year for our trip in November. It looked good on receiving it but, on packing for the trip, realised the elastic straps in the case were far too short and wouldn’t fasten over the clothes. Next big problem was that there was no handle on the side of the case, so it had to be picked up by the top handle and the plastic handle on the bottom of the case between the wheels. Then at the airport on the outward journey, one or two of the 4 wheels took on a life of their own and the case refused to be wheeled in a straight line. Fortunately the wheels survived the flights but the case was a nightmare to handle, not what we expected.
