Activity description

Are you fascinated by speed and Arctic Norwegian nature close to the Arctic Circle? Join the experienced guides of Tromsø Wilderness Center and learn how to ride your own team of racing huskies in Tromsø! No previous experience is required.

Let's paint a picture. It's around 10 am, you are in the northern part of Norway close to the Arctic Circle. Snow has just fallen leaving a couch of powder snow over the scenic mountains of Tromsø. You have your own dog sled with your own excited huskies. It feels like the sled is almost surfing over the snow as you are driving your team of dogs at a fast speed. Thrilling yet peaceful.

Does this sound exciting? Join up the experienced guides of Tromsø Wilderness Center and get the real experience of dog sledding today!

Program:
The tour starts off outside of Radisson Blu Hotel in Tromsø where you will be picked up by your experienced guides. After a 25 minutes trip, you will reach the perfect destination for you to start dog sledding.

You'll have your own team of dogs with your friend and can switch drivers in the middle of the track. After about 4 km (45 to 60 min.), you'll also get to meet the Huskies and puppies. Two people will share a sled with 5 to 7 dogs. An expert guide will lead the group in a separate sled.
After a ride out in the Norwegian winter, you'll enjoy a Bidos, a local meal prepared with reindeer meat, broth, and vegetables (vegetarian meal available upon request).

After the activity, tired yet full of many newly created exciting memories Tromsø Wilderness Center will drive you back to Radison Blu Hotel.

Offer Description

You will have the opportunity to try driving a dog sled yourself. You will share one sled between two people, one will be driving and the other one will be riding the sled as the passenger, and at the halfway point of the tour, there will be the opportunity to switch places. This is of course not a must, should both parties agree to not switch.

Course of events

Transport: total 1 hour
Dogsledding: 4 km. 1 hour (+/- 10 minutes)
Dogyard visit: 45 Minutes
Lunch: 50 minutes
Changing clothes: total 25 minutes

Activity requirements

A good physical condition is required, including but not limited to the ability to jog uphill through snow, a good balance (also on 1 foot), and a tight grip.

Since the drivers in this tour are most likely very inexperienced and therefore prone to errors, an age restriction of 16 years is imposed for this tour. It is also applicable for guests that do not intend to drive the sled themselves, e.g. if a parent wants to do the driving and have their child as a passenger - this is not possible unless the child is over 16 years.

A fantastic opportunity to be out in nature with those beautiful friendly dogs. The team who ran the sledding were also really knowledgeable and clearly in love with the dogs!! You really are a team with the dogs, which did mean some running up hills to help the dogs out - but I needed the exercise.

It was fantastic

I went with a group of six and we all thoroughly enjoyed dog sledding. Leo took our group and was very knowledgeable and friendly! It was really fun to be able to operate the dog sled yourself, and very easy to do as well. The lunch was delicious and we met the owner as well who was lovely.

The guides were very friendly and helpful, provided clear information regarding safety

It was really well organised from the transport to the activity. We took billet that allowed us to drive by ourselves the sled and it was pretty easy to understand and to do. Ryan explained us how to do it perfectly clearly. All the staff was super nice ! After the explanations we took place on the sleds and left. Two guides drive in front of everyone so the dogs followed them and we didn't have to direct them. You basically just have to regulate the speed. After, a meal and hot drinks was waiting for us. It was an amazing experience 💫 really worth your money !

Unique and amazing experience, from gliding around the snow-covered trails, to the epic scenery, to the ADORABLE dogs, this was something I will never forget. Our instructors were knowledgeable and friendly. They had positive bonds with the dogs and clearly enjoyed their work. The reindeer soup served in a cozy hut topped off an incredible day. Highly recommend!

We got to meet the dogs and pet them and I was just so happy sharing the love with the doggos (they were all so great).

Dog sledding was easier than I thought so it was the perfect mix between sensational and enjoyment.

Once you get a hang of how to handle the sled, this is such an amazing experience! The dogs were so eager to run and really playful when we were done. It's really an adventure!

  • 5 / 5

It was a great adventure: the dogs are amazing and friendly, the instructors are competent but it is a bit scary to hear so many dogs barking and sometimes struggling with the sleds or pulling. It's worth trying for sure. You can learn a lot about the dogs and the traditional way of living North.

We loved every aspect of our excursion! Charlotte was so friendly and nice. The dogs were very friendly and excited for us to be there. We loved getting to play with them after our dog sledding and we enjoyed a nice warm Sami meal after being in the cold for a few hours!

So good

The dog sledding was very nice! We did the self-drive option and it was the right one for us (I think it would have been boring to just sit and watch). Unfortunately, the weather, in the beginning, was not so good (it snowed a lot and we couldn't see much of the nice surroundings)- but that changed within the hour! The soup and drink we got afterward were very tasty- but for the price, we paid there could have been a bit more!
